The competitors were as follows: 1) Tim Thacker (or Tiny) from Harrogate who competed in Britains Heats this year 2) Terry Cochrane from Scarborough who was a last minute replacement 3) A swedish bloke but I cant remember his name! 4) Francis Kirby from Ireland. Ulsters strongest man 5) Darren Sadler from Harrogate (also in this years Britains strongest man heats) 6) Simon Morton from Durham (another Britains heat competitor) 7) Mark Westerby from York (his first major comp, did well at Scarboroughs strongest man last year) 8) Stumpy from Barnsley (the most famous competitor!)
The first event was a JCB push using back wheel to push against. Suprisingly Simon and Mark were the best at this event (could it be because they are Farmers?)
The second event was an axel + tyre lift above the head.
Unfortunately Simon who was in 1st place after the two events had to retire due to a calf injury.
The 3rd event was loading an atlas stone onto a platform as many times as possible
After this event Francis Kirby had to retire due to a bicep tear.
The fourth event was lifting weights on the leg machine. Only Darren and Stumpy could manage to get at least 1 rep on this event.
The final event was lifting 5 barrels onto the stage and building them into a pyramid.
The final placings were: 1) Stumpy 2) Darren Sadler 3) Mark Westerby Joint 5Tim Thacker and Terry Cochrane 6) The Swedish Bloke (who by the end was limping) 7) Simon Morton
Francis kirby had to leave the comp to get treatment on his injury.
It was unfortunate that this show clashed with other strongman events as although the show was good it didnt match last years team giants comp.

If it is the same person i think i saw simon morton competing in a novice show the other week at a fayre near barnard castle competing against some pure novices and he won which i though was a pretty good win. but surely if he's up to the standard of competing against the likes of stumpy and saddler he is no novice, it can only boil down to an ego trip but his ego must be really low to have to use the novice ranks to gain respect he has lost my respect thats for sure

it was not a pure novice show it was a heat for the North East of England Strongest man 2003. the pass winners incule Rob Dixon, Steve Brooks, big Mal Kaye and Simon Morton. novices have to start some where. plus Simon and strongman in the north east support local shows Simon does not need a ego trip, he needs to do as many shows as he can to inpove as a athlet you should not judge people by what you see, the book may have a bad cover but could be a good read

hello bob you say it was not a pure novice show but the majority of the competitors were not of the calibre to compete against the the athletes at samson giants i recall one was only about 14 stone !!!

I was well impressed with Darren Saddler, quite small, well define and bloody explosive.
Any info about this lad?
Very impressive
