speaking as the wife of a strongman , i'm all for there being a council. It would be a massive benfit to everyone involved in the sport. I have been trying to get my husband backing from hundreds of different companies over the past few years, suppliment companies, supermarkets( you know to help out with the ever growing demand for more and more food!), sports wear brands, you name it i've tried it, in 75% of the rejection letters i received back they all asked in one way or another " which sporting governing body did my husband belong to? is strongman an " offically" recognised sport? was the sport recognise by thr sports council?" and in answer to that question, it's a big NO, and thats mainly because the sport has not got an offical council/ governing body, even IFSA doesn't count. AND THATS WHY I'M SAYING YES YES YES TO A NEW COUNCIL THAT IS DEVELOPED BY STRONGMEN/WOMEN FOR STRONGMEN/WOMEN ( plus the wives and the husbands) good luck boys!!!!!! ;D

if it means more growth from within the sport that has 2 be a good thing , if it means a way for people to skim the cream of profits then its bad but as i for one can see a future in this sport if we all stick together my vote has got to be a very definite YESSSSSSS

YES, YES and YES.
It is long overdue. The way things are at the moment is laughable and no wonder none of our athletes, male or female, cannot get sponsorship. Would you want to sponsor some sport with no governing body? A sport that has no rules in black and white and a selection process that all depends on how ONE person feels. If we want our sport to grow in popularity we need to have people there who are in it to help it. How can the creation of a council be bad? Someone mentions concern over skimming of the profits. Who do you think is taking ALL the profits just now? Our sport will never be taken seriously until we start acting like a serious sport and the only people who take it seriously at the moment are the competitors and the competitors are the ones being shafted at every opportunity. Do you think athletics would act in the way our sport does? Do you think if Linford Christie won the UK finals we would take Wee Boab 'cos he is an alright wee guy and I like him the best just now. It doesn't matter that he has never been placed in a competition. There would be such an uproar if that happened. You may well laugh and think this is an exaggeration, but think about it. If your face doesn't fit, it doesn't matter how many comps you win, you won't be selected.
Get a council set up and the sooner the better. You won't get new blood if the whole sport is seen as a sham and a scam and sadly it is heading that way rapidly.
Good luck with it and here's hoping we save our sport.

chris that was exactly my point about skimming, theres a fat cat making loads out of the sport whereas witha reputable council the money could be duly allocated to help promote the sport not the said fat cats bank balance!!!

to Anon,
The man with the hat is a complete irrelavance. Neither he or his 'company' has done anythimg to promote the sport and the whole idea of a council is that everybody is represented.
Once all the area's are covered, we need 2 yes two treasurers, preferably from different regions who can be trusted with the money. Set up a bank account in the name of the association (whatever is decided).
Once this is done, I would me more than willing to pay a yearly subscription to the association. NO SUBS, NO SAY!
ANY major decisions in conection with the association then go to the vote. If your not a member, you don't get a vote. It must be not for profit and all profits made go back into the sport.
Darren.

take a look at www.uksport.gov.uk - click onto SPORTS - then onto SPORT A-Z. And just take a look at all the so called national sports that are listed there and how much money they receive from the government and the lottery per year. extreme or wot. and after you've done that sit back and think of how that much money could benifit our sport on a whole. Setting up nation leauges takes money, holding regional events costs a lot of money, have the best kit made up for everysingle strongman/woman to use at a national training training area.ect...................... take a look for yourselfs and you'll see that every one the listed sports has it's very own COUNCIL or GOVERNING BODY.

Im currently a powerlifter but would like to move into strongman eventing. The thing that puts me off is the fact that there isnt such a thing as you are proposing. So I say yes. Then once and for all this sport will become everthing that it can be and not the once a year, 6 months after it finishes schedule filler on tv (this isnt my opinion! Just what joe public observes!) but a living breathing recognised sport that does justice to the efforts those who do compete and to the memory of those who have saddly passed. Good luck and good lifting to you all.

every body knows my answer is YES But the money will come when not if we have a council. I put 6 shows on in 2003 as part of villages fun days and truck show, got prize money for some shows from sponsers. i know i have my own equipment but it does not cost a lot to put shows on, it cost when you only in it to make money

I hope to compete at the man with the funny hats competition in a few years, i hope that by joining or being part of this council it doesnt jepordise that, but other than that i think its a brilliant idea and hopefully we can work together with ifsa. Also well done Bob for speaking up about this at the end of the day you could just mind youre own business and do youre own thing but youre not, you know this sport could be bigger and have more people involved so we need more people like you spearheading the sport. Its thanks to you that i have started competing and i hope to be a future britains strongest man so thanks alot and keep banging away with this idea of a council . see ya on the 5th lads. STRENGTH AND HONOUR.
