Hello lads, I'm all for promoting the sport but just a few thoughts....................
First of all we need to get this word NOVICE defined once and for all. I am a novice. I've only been training for these kind of events since march this year and only done 1 show (Allhallows novice). There should be some sort of rule that any novice who places higher than say 3rd place in a novice show should then only be eligable for open shows.
Now, confusing the issue further, we have the Novice British Isles Strongest Man. Just because someone has never been on BSM or one an open show does not make them a novice. They are an open competitor who is not strong enough to get through to the Britains.
Also, the novice show weights seem to be increasing at every show which is pushing any true novice's out of competitions.
Secondly, weight classes will never work in strongman events. Look at Glen Ross and Marc Illife. There was about a 10 stone difference between them!
I weigh at the moment 20st 7lb and came about 24th in the Allhalows novice. Paul Wood weighs probably about 17st and came 3rd!
Best regards to all, Darren

Ok back to the topic.
Yes we do need to define 'novice' . I feel this needs to be set by each promoter for is event. That way he can decide the level and the market for his/ her comp.
Just in the same way as you would do for a masters comp ie Over 40's only can enter or Lightweight comps where only under say 100 kg bodyweight athletes may enter etc.
So once we set up the promoters for this to be national final with regional qualifiers we will discuss the novice criteria

sorry guys just returned from the gym and the chat room replies, want happen again from my girls. the show at south coast was one of the last for the year and both noviced/open events were heavy.darrens right that did put alot of guys off, that i believe wasn't the intension, just a grand ending for the year. but also open guys i believe should be using heavier weights,so they have a chance in world comps.

we need to make the regions smaller. for example Yorkshire is a bigger enough region on its own. The north east could be from yorkshire boarder to the scotish boarder. This will make for more comps but a true champion at the end.
